Goa is famous for it's night life, happening beaches and party atmosphere. But, sometimes, you might want to contrast that, and visit lesser known places instead, away from the crowd. Here are some of them:
Basillica of Bom Jesus
This is a Roman Catholic basillica, presently holding the mortal remains of St. Frances Xavier. It is a UNESCO World Heritage structure. The photograph fails to capture just how large and imposing this structure is; and the bare red looks even more surreal in person, in a city of mostly greens and blues.
Aguada Fort
Alright, so this place is actually rather famous, but is definitely worth checking out... not for the fort itself, but for the views behind it. On-route, there is a final right turn that takes you to the fort. However, going straight ahead instead, you end up on a beautiful road that runs right along the edge of the hill this fort is located on. The views are incredible.
Archaeological Survey of India
This is a vast campus dedicated to the Archaeological Survey of India. Entry is free, and you can spend an evening here, stroll around, or sit by the gardens and unwind. The campus has a distinctly European vibe to it, and it just feels calm and peaceful to be there... not to mention really really beautiful. Conveniently, this place is right opposite to Basilica of Bom Jesus.
Lesser Known Beaches
What's a trip to Goa without beaches? But is it possible to visit a beach and beat the crowd? Absolutely. Just head north. The beaches along North Goa are relatively lesser visited and thus, lesser crowded. These include Morjim Beach, Ashwem Beach, Mandrem Beach and Arambol Beach. Of these, Morjim is the least accesible, and thus, the least crowded. Arambol, on the other hand, strikes a balance between having a little bit of activity and not being too crowded.
Cabo de Rama
If you have some extra time at hand, this underrated gem is absolutely worth the long drive. Located about 70km south of the Baga and Calangute area, this is a relatively unknown and unvisited fort with amazing views.
The fort is on a hillside with views of the ocean in both directions. On one side you have a beach and some interesting rock formations in the distance:
And on the other side, a brilliant view of a mountain cliff dropping into the ocean:
There are also routes leading down from the fort to the rocks along the coast.
And there you have it. A couple of interesting places to see in Goa, that not a lot of people know about. Enjoy!
