Tourism and crowds usually make places less worthwhile to visit. While Niagara Falls is a tourist hotspot thanks to it's easy accesibility from the major city of Toronto on the Canada side, it is a sight that is impressive enough to be worthwhile despite the tourists.
The falls themselves are a good 40-45 min walk from the Niagara Falls GO station. The walk through the town is shorter, but it is much more fun to walk along the river; the views are pretty good.
It is generally better to visit the falls in the first half of a sunny day; the sun is directly behind you, creating a wonderful rainbow in the mist of the falls.
The bigger horeshoe falls straddle the border between USA and Canada, while the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls are entirely in USA in the state of New York, USA. The Canada side has a really good view of these falls.
Of course, continuing with the theme of touristy things that are worth your while, is the boat ride ride that takes you close to the waterfall!
